Yellowstone Family Travel Hotel Tips- Canyon Lodge

Canyon Lodge hotel inside Yellowstone

If you are looking for a hotel inside Yellowstone National Park there are only a few choices and their locations are pretty spread out. Here is all the info about Canyon Lodge.canyon-lodge_yellowstone

When you pull up to Canyon Lodge at Yellowstone National Park to check in your will notice it is DEFINITELY very early 60’s looking, BUT have no fear because the newly built lodges that house the rooms are beautiful!

The newer lower buildings with hotel rooms.

They just recently finished construction on most of the lodges and were working on 2 more while we were there.  They still have a few of the super dated 1950’s style cabins, but the rooms inside the lodges are new and very well appointed, so when you are booking be aware of the different between the cabin and the lodge room.

canyon_lodge_roomWe stayed in a Superior Lodge Room With Patio and it was the nicest room hands down that we stayed in at Yellowstone. Like I said, it was very new.  It was also spacious and had a mini fridge.

My only recommendation is to request a room away from the entry of the lodge.  We had a room near the entry and it is a set of automatic sliding doors, so we could hear it sliding open and closed until late in the night and then starting very early in the morning.

canyon_bathroomCanyon Lodge is, like you would imagine, right by the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.  I booked a different hotel for each night we were in Yellowstone, so it enabled us to work our way around the park without having to drive all the way back around to the same hotel each night. Yellowstone is huge and the roads are basically 2 big loops. Just the Grand Loop Road alone is 142 miles. In my opinion and experience, you don’t want to have to visit the Lower Geyser Basin on the other side of the park and then have to back track all the way to Canyon Lodge afterwards.  You can read my post about our stay at the Old Faithful Inn here

map_yellowstoneThere is a nice sit down restaurant, a cafeteria style restaurant, a deli, and at the General Store in the Canyon Village there is a diner style counter restaurant.  The General Store was decorated in the late 50’s early 60’s style and in my opinion was super cute.  My tip for food in Yellowstone is that you aren’t going to find the best food your have ever ate by any means, but it is good enough.  So keep that in mind when you are planning meals.  We brought snacks and the makings for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with us.

canyon-lodge-foodThe Village area that has the hotel checkin, gift shops, visitor center and restaurants is up the hill from the lodges with the hotel rooms.  It would be a very long walk, but they do run a shuttle.  In our case though we had a car, so we just drove up and parked to poke around and eat up there.

grand_canyon_yellowstoneI would definitely recommend the Canyon Lodge for it’s newness factor and the area of the park that it is in is a MUST see when you head to Yellowstone.

Have you stayed at Canyon Lodge before?

Excellent! We have a Superior Lodge Room With Patio reserved for two nights later this month. Any photos or comments on the “patio”? I’m assuming a small area with a couple of chairs and small table?

Yes, it is on the ground floor with 2 chairs and a little table. I just added a picture to this post so you could see. Have a great trip!
