Things To Know About runDisney Springtime Surprise Race Weekend at Disney World
The runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend at Walt Disney World is a fun race weekend that takes place in April, in Florida. There are some things that you should be aware of if you want to plan on running these races.
- Weather– The April weather in Florida isn’t very unpredictable. It tends to be humid and have sudden downpours. The temperatures are starting to warm up in Florida in April, so if you are looking for typically cooler, less humid weather, I would recommend running January Marathon Weekend instead.
- Race Themes– The SURPRISE of Springtime Surprise Weekend is the race themes. They change every year and are lots of fun. In the past they have included all Pixar themed race and also throwback themes to things like Tower of Terror 10 Miler and Expedition Everest 5k.
- Race Distances– This is the only runDisney race weekend where the longest distance offered is the 10 miler. All the other race weekends have a half marathon and one of them also has a full marathon. Springtime Surprise offers a 5k, 10k and 10 miler, which is a great option for someone who isn’t quite ready for a half marathon, but would like something longer than a 10k. That said, as an experienced runner, I will say that if you have trained and can run a 10 miler, you can run a half marathon.
- 3 Race Challenge– The “Challenge” offered at MOSTt runDisney weekend is just 2 races and consists of running the 10k and half marathon (with the exception of Disney World Marathon Weekend). HOWEVER, Springtime Surprise challenge is all 3 races. So if you register for the Challenge you are registering to run the 5k, 10k and 10 miler and then you get the bonus challenge medal.
- EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival– This race weekend is during the EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival, which is a really beautiful time to visit the park. There are gorgeous Disney character topiaries around and also fun events. I love the butterfly garden that is near the Imagination pavilion. There are also specialty food booths around, much like the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival.
- Avoids Easter– The race weekend dates change each year depending on where Easter falls that year. It will never be the same weekend as Easter.
- Sells Out Fast– Like all runDisney races, if you want to register, be online before registration opens to have a chance of getting in. This race will sell out the same day. If you aren’t able to register, keep an eye out for charities that have bibs available in exchange for fundraiser. Occasionally runDisney will also open back up a race as available, this will be for about 10 minutes though, so you have to be fast.
