Simple Ways to Create A Running Costume- My runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon Jessie Costume

I won’t lie that a lot of the fun of a runDisney race is seeing so many people running in costume.  Most of my costume ideas come from what my daughter wants me to wear.

The best way to create a costume is pull up a picture of the character and work from there.  For the runDisney Wine and Dine Half Marathon 2013 my daughter and I decided on Jessie from Toy Story.

For the costume I needed a white shirt, so I hit the Target clearance rack and found a tech material golf shirt with a collar for only $5.  I used fabric marker to color the yellow and red on and than I sewed big white buttons on to make it look more doll like.

I was a little worried about the fabric pens bleeding on me when I would sweat during the run, so after I colored the shirt I let it dry for 24 hours and than washed it to get rid of excess ink.  The colors faded slightly so I touched it up with the markers.  They ran a little after I ran in the shirt, but not a ton and not all over me, so it worked great.

Since Jessie wears a long sleeve shirt with big yellow cuffs I got white sparkle sleeves from Sparkle Athletic (#TeamSparkle) and used the fabric pens to color the cuffs.  I also got the red visor from Sparkle Athletic to be a runner friendly version of Jessie’s red hat.  I love their visors because it is also a sweatband.

This pic above was taken after I wore them for the race.  You can see that the color ran a little, but not to bad.

Next I took a Sharpie marker and drew a cow print on my compression sleeves.

Last but not least I needed jeans.  Luckily INKnBURN makes “performance denim”.  It looks like denim, but made out of tech material.  I have both the capri pants and the skirt.  I was debating on which one to wear.

I decided to go with the run skirt since it was hot in Florida.

Yes, that is also my breakfast of oatmeal in the pic above.  I was eating while crafting 🙂

I love the pic with your little one! I’m working on Rapunzel for WDW and then maybe a Cars theme for Tinkerbell. With two months left, I many change my mind several times…

You are so talented and creative! I’m doing the Avengers half and I can’t make up my mind on how to design a costume or what should I be!?. Can you give me some ideas and some inspiration? Thanks!

First pick who you want to dress as. A Disney Villain? Disney Princess? Marvel super hero? There are solo many choices. I recommend picking someone that would make your run even more fun. DO you have a favorite? Next find a picture of that character and work on finding running clothes that match the costume, then just embellish the running clothes. 🙂 I will “see” you at the Avenger Half Marathon.

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m totally stealing the Jessie costume, since I am Jessi! I ran my first Wine and Dine last year as my first half marathon – not knowing what to expect I didn’t dress up and wish I had. Now that this year will be 1/2 #3, I’ve been trying to decide on a costume since I know what to expect this time. Thanks for the ideas!

I can’t wait to see how it turns out!!! Good luck and have fun!!! I will “see” you there 🙂
