If you are a regular reader around here, then you know I have ran countless races and love sharing about all the details. With the pandemic and lockdown I haven’t ran a physical race since Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans in February 2020. That is 1.5 years now without a physical running race. My first race back will be Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose 5k and Half Marathon October 2-3. Then I will head to the Chicago Marathon October 10th. Go big or go home right?
Those races are quickly followed by Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego 5k and Half Marathon October 23-24. And then…a big one On November 7 that I will share with you soon!
I have had the privilege of running the Chicago Marathon 2 other times and it is always incredible. I can’t wait to run it for my third time. Now if everyone can go get vaccinated, so we can actually have this plans happen that would be great.
Curious to learn more about the Chicago Marathon? Here are my posts about My First Chicago Marathon (not my first marathon)
The Chicago Marathon is a great course because it is relatively flat. The spectators for the race have always been incredible, out there cheering every step along the course. The race is extremely well organized, like all the major world marathons are. You run through pretty much all the amazing Chicago neighborhoods.
I also love Chicago as a city. There are tons of great restaurants and hotels, which are both important for a successful racecation. (That is a trip you take for a race.) Garret Popcorn? Yes please!
I definitely recommend staying at a hotel that is walking distance to the starting line, which is also then close to the finish line.
If you are running the Chicago Marathon for the first time, plan on spending some time at the expo when you pick up your bib. The expo is huge with tons of vendors and lots of fun. Pro tip: don’t buy new clothes there and then wear them for the race though. You will want to have worn your clothes before for a long run so you know they won’t chafe or cause blisters.

Rock ‘n’ Roll races are always fun. They do them in so many cities that they are pretty much a copy/paste race if you know what I mean. But they are usually well organized and you know what you are going to get.
