We were all speculating what the big runDisney announcement would be today. New course? New challenge? More entries? Well the it turns out it is news about the Tinker Bell Half Marathon for 2015, it is moving to Mother’s Day weekend! Here is the official announcement:
It has always been in January (2013 will be it’s third year). The Disney World Marathon weekend is currently the weekend right before the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. Some people felt that it didn’t get the attention it deserved since it was in the shadows of Marathon weekend. I’m not going to lie, I am pretty happy about that Tink moved because I love the Mother’s Day buffet in the Disneyland Hotel Ballroom, so this is a win win for me. I am also happy that I don’t have to run Dopey and than another 10k and half marathon immediately the next weekend in 2015 (like am doing this year).
On the flip side, the last 2 years I have earned my Coast to Coast medal right off the bat in January running both WDW Marathon weekend and the Tinker Bell Half. Now there will be no Coast to Coast until May at the earliest. This also brings me to the weather issue. Generally speaking May is a lot more toasty than January. May however, is still not as hot as Labor Day 😉 (Disneyland Half).
What are your thoughts? Happy about the change? Not happy? Totally impartial???
( Can I add that I am writing and posting this while on my Southwest Flight home from Florida. I love technology! Yay airplane wifi!)

I am thrilled by this news! I am running Dopey and there’s just no way for me to turn right around and head to California (from Georgia) for Tink. Even WDWmarathon and Princess being only 6wks apart can be a bit tough for so much travel (and expenses) so close together. Ideally, I would love to participate in WDWmarathon 2015 in some capacity and would still love to earn my first Coast2Coast medal. Looks like my new California trip is being moved to 2015, and will hopefully be one extra generous Mother’s Day gift!

I noticed on the Disneyland Annual Passholder website that not only notes the date change, but also says WALT DISNEY WORLD???! 🙁
I hope not!

I noticed that too…and I am hoping not also.

It’s true, now we here on the west coast will once again be down to one race while those on the East coast enjoy even more! So not happy about it. With the 1/2 in August/Sept those who can’t get away due to school schedules are out of luck for any chance at a Coast to Coast. This is just another blunder on the Run Disney team’s record. Moving the 5k to Friday morning makes it nearly impossible for families to take part in the event. It’s hard enough to get there Friday and to be there early Thursday to pick up stuff is nearly impossible. Those that ran this year were mostly older single or non kid families. My kids were very upset, they are too old for the kids races, too young for the 10k.

There are rumors of a new race that will be at Disneyland in January and that is why they moved Tinker Bell. I don’t know anything for sure, but that is the rumor. Hopefully that will work better for families. 🙂

Run Disney, Disneyland annual pass holder website, and the Disney Examiner all had the next Tnkerbell race listed at WDW. Today all the websites have been updated: the race will continue to be at Disneyland. I have also heard rumors of a Star Wars themed race, no one will either confirm or deny those allegations.

I ran Tinkerbell last week with some friends. One of the cast members told us that next year Disneyland will introduce a Star Wars and an Avengers half marathon weekend (2 separate race weekends). I hope she is right… I’d love to run a Star Wars half!!

I heard a rumor that that is why they moved Tinker Bell to May is to make way for the new race in January. I heard Star Wars and I’ve also heard a villain theme, kind of like Tower of Terror 10 Miler in Florida. It will be interesting to see what unfolds 🙂
