Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon Weekend is always in the middle November. The weekend has a 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon in Vegas.
For the Las Vegas marathon they close down the Vegas Strip for runners. The Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon, half marathon and 10k all run down the strip at night.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Vegas course is flat. Very very flat and could be good for a PR if you are looking for one. Here is a course video of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon.
Like any race, if you train properly for a night race you shouldn’t have an extra hard time. Here is a post with 10 tips for running a night race. Follow those tips and you should do great!
Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series has a lot of ways to earn extra medals. During race weekends, if they have a 5k one day and a 10k, half marathon, or full marathon the next day you can earn what is called the Remix Challenge Medal. Las Vegas has this option and I earned the bonus medal for running the 5k and the half marathon.
Rock ‘n’ Roll running series also has what they call the Heavy Medals. These are for other challenges like a certain combination or race destinations or running multiple races within the series.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas offers both a full marathon and a half marathon the same night. The course starts the same for both and then the full marathon splits off towards the end of the half marathon.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Las Vegas has their expo at the Las Vegas convention center, which can be easily reached by taking the Las Vegas Monorail. In 2019 they offered runners discounted monorail tickets to be able to get around easier.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas 5k takes place Saturday night and in 2019 was at the festival grounds near Circus Circus, utilizing the back roads and parking lot area for the course.
Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series always pulls in a big name for their concert headliner. The concert is free for runners and usually takes place after the 5k on Saturday night. In 2019 the headliner was Kesha. Some past concert headlines in Vegas have included Kid Rock and Snoop Dogg.
Running in Las Vegas can be either really hot or really cold depending on the time of year, but also can fluctuate drastically. Another thing to keep in mind is that Vegas is a desert and is really dry. Make sure to hydrate.
When picking a hotel to stay at in Las Vegas keep in mind that the Vegas Strip will be closed to traffic, which means traffic in other parts of the city will be BAD! I recommend staying right on the strip and walking distance to the FINISH LINE. It will be easier for you to navigate your way to the start line with able legs, but when you are done you will be glad to have a hotel near by. I recommend Thew Venetian, Palazzo, The Mirage, Bellagio, and Caesar’s Palace.
I flew in Saturday afternoon, went to expo to get 5k bib, went to hotel to change and made my way to 5k starting area via the Las Vegas monorail. It was easy, but FYI the monorail was really crowded with runners, so plan accordingly. I relaxed most of Sunday and then made my way to the half marathon starting line. The corrals opened at 3:30pm and the race started at 4:30pm. I walked to the starting line village and it was easy to do.
I had a fantastic time running the Rock n Roll Half Marathon Las Vegas and will definitely run it again. It can be both a party or a serious PR depending on what race you want to run. Start towards the front for a PR or run in the back party corrals and drink a beer through the course. Totally your choice. It is a really fun race to do with a group of people.
