Let’s Talk Gut Health- 4 Tips For Better Digestion

tips_for_better_digestionOk, let’s get honest here.  Do you plan your training runs around places where you know they have a bathroom you can use?  I always thought I had a sensitive stomach growing up.  This was never fun at any stage in my life.  It wasn’t until recently that I started focusing on my digestion and making changes in my daily routine.  It made a world of difference.  My whole digestive system works so much better and I feel amazing.  Here are my tips for improving your health and feeling better:

water_with_mint1. Hydrate- Drink lots of water.  We have all heard the 8×8 rule (8 servings of 8oz a day), but if you are working out you need to be drinking more than this for a happy healthy body.  Tip: Have a water bottle or glass that you know the size of, i.e. 16oz.  This will help you track your water intake throughout the day.  Make hydrating a top priority.  Always have water with you in the car, office, on the kitchen counter, and nightstand.  If you get bored with just plain water add some mint or lemon.  This is also good for digestion.

exercise_digestive_health2.  Regular Exercise- Consistent exercise is important.  Not exercising at all and then running 20 miles isn’t a good idea and is very hard on your body.  Stay consistent with your routine and listen to your body.

align_probiotic3. Probiotics– Incorporating probiotics into your routine is super easy. I just take one Align Probiotic capsule in the morning daily.  Align Probiotics fortifies your digestive system with healthy bacteria 24/7. (Legal disclaimer: With continued daily use).  True story, there use to be race mornings where my gut felt so horrible that I questioned whether or not to even run it.  Now that I incorporated probiotic into my routine I haven’t had this problem.  Has this happened to you?

4. Eat a Rainbow of Fruits and Vegetables- You should make sure to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables on a regular basis.  Tip: Think of all the colors of the rainbow and make sure you are eating some of each color.  Your body needs all the different vitamins, nutrients, and fiber that fruits and vegetables has to offer.
