Dopey Challenge Injury Report- Advice Please!

Last year I decided to run a trail race near me 3 weeks before Dopey Challenge.  It was a trail that goes through the redwood forrest so it has lots of tree roots and rocks.  My ankles rolled a little while running.  My ankles felt tender after the race, but nothing major.  That night though my left ankle looked like this.

I did some serious icing, elevation, and compression to get it back into shape by Dopey Challenge.  It bothered me a little during the race, but was over all ok.

This year I didn’t even sign up for any December races, but my ding dong self decided on a rainy day to take my daughter to the indoor trampoline park.  I once again learned my lesson.  I felt my knee tweak at one point.  It hurt a little, but not very much.  It doesn’t hurt day to day at all.  It only starts to hurt while running.  I once again am icing etc.  I’ve taken a couple sports medicine classes and there is not a tear because A. I’m not in excruciating pain and B. There is no sideways movement when I move the top and bottom of my leg separately.  My doctor is closed this week and pretty sure he would just tell me rest and ice anyways.

Here is my question:  I am going to either get a brace or tape of some sort.  Any knee recommendations on what you guys use and like would be awesome.  Ace brace? KT Tape? Or suggestions?  Thank you 🙂

Oh, no! I do like KT Tape for extra stability, but I’m not sure how it will hold up for so many miles. I hope the resting and icing and all that help and it stops bothering you 🙁

Obviously rest and ice. I would suggest I simple knee sleeve. Possibly with the cap hole… But you may not need that. KTape is good for a little support in specific places but the sleeve will hold the whole thing in line. buy a good neoprene one from a sporting goods store, not a crappy ace bandage one.

I have a ton of miles on weak knees, and nothing has worked like a basic sleeve.

Oh no! Hopefully you get better soon! A lot of improvement can happen in seven days. I’m doing my first Dopey and I’ve been trying to be careful wherever possible, but accidents happen.

KT Tape gives you a bit of support, but you may need more than tape. A knee brace will give you better support. I’ve tried one and it didn’t feel comfortable to me, but it works for some people. I think you want a brace without the hole in the knee. I believe the ones with holes are designed to keep your knee tracking properly in its socket. You’re looking more for stability. You can do some reading about it.

I’ve heard of people using Biofreeze to numb their pain during the race, but I’ve never tried it myself and it’s not really the right way to deal with an injury.

As for icing, I have an ice pack that wraps and velcros to my knee (or elbow). I find those to be handy for when you need to walk around the house. You can buy ones for ice packs and ones you can fill with water and freeze. Proseries is a good one, but you can buy cheaper ones at the drug store or probably Walmart.

They hand out biofreeze along the course, so that could help I guess. The tape I’ve tried a couple times now and it definitely makes a difference. I need to search out a brace I think. Thank you SO much for the tips!!! 🙂
