7 Things That Make You A Runner

group of people high divingI always hear people say, “They aren’t a real runner.” What the heck does that even mean? Where is the line drawn that designate what makes someone a “real” runner vs. a fake runner? Thats BS in my opinion. Anyone can be a runner. Here is a list of some of the things that make you a runner.

  1. Being really excited about a new pair of running shoes. Runners are always happy about new kicks.
  2. Paying money to run; i.e. registering for a race. My husband always jokes around that it’s crazy to pay money to run, when anyone can just go run. He obviously doesn’t get it. 😉
  3. Keeping track of how fast you can finish a mile. Runners are always happy when they can decrease their mile pace.
  4. Setting a goal. Whether it’s running a 5k or running a marathon, running around the whole neighborhood or running solidly until the stop sign on your street. Setting a goal and accomplishing something makes you a runner.
  5. Googling something that has to do with running. Runners are always curious about chafing issues, good carb loading ideas, registering for a new race, or what new shoes to get. If you have googled something about running, you are most likely a full fledged runner.
  6. Encouraging another runner. The running community is, generally speaking, the most amazing group of people. A runner will often encourage and cheer on another runner, especially if they look like they are struggling and need a little encouragement. I love this about being a runner.
  7. Running. Any running. Even if you go out there and run for 1 minute and walk for 9 minutes, you are still a runner and don’t let anyone tell you differently. You don’t have to qualify for the Boston Marathon to be a runner. You just have to go out and run.

Never let anyone make you feel bad. In my opinion, anyone who shames another runner is the one who isn’t a true runner. A real runner is kind to their community. So just remember,  go out there, have fun, run safe, and smile at another runner and that is what makes you a runner.
