10 Tips About What To Feed Your Baby

Thank you to Stonyfield Organic for sponsoring today’s post.  All opinions are always my own.

Every new parent has the struggle of deciding what is best to feed their baby and what their baby will actually eat.  After breast milk or formula, what’s next?  I remember this stage being really stressful.  New parents want to begin introducing other foods and solids and can feel overwhelmed by where to start.  Even at this stage you are also developing healthy eating habits.  Yep, healthy eating habits start forming even at this stage!  Helping your baby create a love of healthy foods at a young age can grow into a lifelong habit.  It’s important to ensure your baby is still receiving all of those same nutrients as you transition away from breast milk.  Here are 10 tips on what to feed your baby:

  1. Dairy has calcium, vitamin D and DHA for babies growing bodies and brain development, but babies under the age of one should not drink regular cow’s milk.  Great news! Babies as young as six months can eat yogurt. Not only is it a nutritious option, you’ll find that infants love yogurt!  It was Little Monkey’s favorite food as a baby. Choose a brand made with whole milk, like Stonyfield Organic YoBaby®, the #1 Pediatrician Recommended yogurt for babies 6 months to 2 years among refrigerated yogurts.** Start by giving babies 2 tablespoons three to four times a week, and increase as they’re ready to eat more.
  2. Probiotics are an important part of a healthy diet.  As you transition off breast milk, babies lose those probiotics unless they’re supplied by another food source. Yogurt is a great source of probiotics for your baby.
  3. Probiotics are good bacteria that help regulate your baby’s gut health
  4. Yogurt is on my list of “11 Foundation Foods.”  It’s an excellent food for babies starting at 6 months of age as it provides protein, calcium, vitamin D and of course, probiotics. Formulated specifically for babies, Stonyfield YoBaby® .  Stonyfield recently added the probiotic, BB-12® to YoBaby. BB-12® has been shown to have a digestive health benefit when consumed regularly as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
  5. Make sure the packaging is safe.  We all know to avoid BPA, but it goes way beyond that.  Stonyfield YoBaby® uses PLA cups (meaning, made from plants!) No polystyrene packaging!  PLUS plant-based packaging has a lower carbon footprint.
  6. It’s what’s inside that matters.  Just because baby food says “organic” or “Non-GMO” doesn’t mean it’s necessarily fresh and nutrition optimized. Shelf stable baby food can sit on the shelf for over 2 years, which can be older than the baby eating it.
  7. You want food that has fresh ingredients and not loaded with preservatives.  Once Upon a Farm pouches only has the freshest, and most nutrient-dense food inside . You won’t ever find any preservatives, concentrates or processed purees in them. “Just fresh, whole ingredients picked in season from our partner farms, Cold Pressure Protected, refrigerated and delivered fresh from farm to highchair™.”
  8. Avoid added sweeteners! Stonyfield YoBaby® have removed added sweeteners from their Banana Mango yogurts!  You would be surprised how much yogurt and baby food has added sweetness.  Be aware!
  9. High Pressure Processing (HPP) allows the flavors, colors, smells, textures, and nutrients of the food intact, leading to optimal taste and palate development in infants.  Once Upon a Farm uses this technology when making their baby food.  This matters because the food babies eat now is the food they will prefer when they are older.
  10. Remember your baby will grow up so fast.  Take the worry and stress out of what you are feeding them with these tips and enjoy those precious moments.
